Spring is upon us and baby birds are learning to fly.

Do you know what to do if you see a fledgling?

The best thing to do is to leave the bird alone.  Most of the time it's parents will be around keeping it safe and watching it as it hops around or sits on the ground.  It can take a baby bird up to 2 weeks to learn how to fly.

If you think the bird is in danger there are a few things you can do to protect it.  Put your cat or dog inside the house so they can't get the bird.  You can place it in a tree or shrub if safe to do so but avoiding contact is best.

If the bird has been injured you can bring it to your closest vet for treatment.  Native birds will be checked over by the vet and passed onto a wildlife carer if they are well enough for rehabilitation.
